JUDGE - VIVIAN BOND
The cookery sub-committee thanks Vivian for once again joining us to judge Section K, Cookery.

“My interest in competitive cooking began when I was in Rural Youth having wins at club and district level. In those days Rural Youth members exhibited local products in the district shows. Exhibits included homemade cooking which the girls would put on the display to be judged later. I decided to enter the cooking section at the shows when one of the judges passed the remark that our cooking was better than some of the cooking ‘over there’.
I entered about three things the first time, one being lemon and melon jam with which I had my first win, so from then on I began to enter more items. I have won several trophies and highest aggregate points over the years. I was asked to be a cooking steward under the long time stewards for a while until running a dairy farm, while my husband was out hay contracting, stopped me from being a steward and entering as much. I didn’t do so well then.
I was once asked if the prize money covered the entry fees, it always did. I have entered Allora and Killarney shows with some success there also. About twelve years ago I was asked to take on chief steward at the Warwick show after the previous one retired. I took on the horticultural section that year also as they couldn’t find anyone else to do it.
I became a cooking judge about nine years ago when Stanthorpe Show Society had trouble finding judges and someone suggested me. Since then I’ve completed judging courses and have judged every year but one. I have also judged at Goombungee/Haden show, Lowood and Ipswich show this year.
I also grow and exhibit roses and have won numerous prizes with them and with vegetables.
I enjoy judging and exhibiting. Once it gets into your blood you don’t seem to be able to let it go. My specialities are jams and biscuits.
Vivian Bond.
